Celebrating Steve Jones MBE at Ebbw Vale Sports Centre
2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the incredible record-breaking London Marathon victory by local legend Steve Jones MBE, and to celebrate we are proud to host a very special display at Ebbw Vale Sports Centre in his honour.
In 1985, Steve Jones not only won the London Marathon, but he set a new course record for a British runner at a time of 2:08:16. The record-breaking time would stand for 33 years, only being broken by Mo Farrah in 2018.
But his accomplishments didn’t end there, in 1984 Steve Jones won the Chicago Marathon and set a new world record with a time of 2:08:05 and in the following years he set more records and gained more medal honours:
Gold medal at the 1985 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:07:13 (setting a new course record and national record)
Silver medal at the 1985 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:12:37
Gold medal at the 1988 New York Marathon with a time of 2:08:20 (setting a course record)
Gold medal at the 1992 Toronto Marathon with a time of 2:10:06
To celebrate these incredible feats of athleticism by a local legend, and maybe even inspire a new generation of record breaking runners, a special display of Steve Jones’ London Marathon victory memorabilia, and other treasured items from his career is now available to view at the fitness suite in Ebbw Vale Sports Centre.
