Refugee Week and Windrush Cymru Exhibition

To celebrate Windrush Day and Refugee Week this week, our libraries across Blaenau Gwent have a range of exhibitions and resources available to enable people to foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety.

Refugee Week 16th - 22nd June

Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

To celebrate this year’s theme of ‘community as a superpower’ we have a specially curated collection of books to browse at Ebbw Vale Library which amplify the voices and stories of those seeking sanctuary. Our other libraries across Blaenau Gwent also have their own themed book displays as well, featuring titles for children and adults.

Don’t forget - library members can request a book from any library in Blaenau Gwent, so titles are available to all residents throughout the county borough.

Windrush Cymru Exhibition

Our libraries at Abertillery and Tredegar are also honoured to host a special exhibition celebrating the history of the Windrush generation in Wales. The exhibition is free to view and will be available until 7th July. Information on our libraries opening times can be found here.

The Windrush Cymru Exhibition shares the achievements and contributions of those who settled in the UK from the Caribbean and their descendants. These pioneers played a vital role in rebuilding Britain – working in steel mills, coal mines, hospitals and public transport - shaping the fabric of our nation.
