Green Libraries Week

Green Libraries Week takes place between 21–28 October to celebrate libraries across all sectors, with a focus on leading climate and sustainability initiatives for their users and communities.

The week is a showcase of the very best that libraries have to offer, where we explore and celebrate inventive and inspiring activities engaging with local communities to highlight the diverse ways that we are working with users.

We have a range of FREE activities taking place across our libraries to celebrate, and are highlighting some of our sustainable initiatives:

  • Crafting with Chris - Join us at Ebbw Vale Library on Saturday, 24th October for some eco-friendly craft activities. Suitable for children aged 5+, call Ebbw Vale Library on 01495 369615 to book your FREE place. For more info visit our Libraries Events page here.

  • Borrow a Costume - We are supporting sustainability and recycling efforts by working with Families First to loan FREE fancy-dress costumes for children during October. Costumes will be available to borrow from Monday, 12th October, right through to the end of half term.  All costumes will be held in Tredegar, but you can pop into any library to make a request, and we’ll get them sent over to you.

  • Sports Libraries - It’s not just books available to borrow at our libraries, you can also borrow free sports and fitness equipment for up to 3 weeks. Items include a variety of sports balls, cricket sets, boccia and tennis rackets as well as dumbbells, resistance bands and swimming sets. Visit our Sports Libraries page for more info.

  • Litter Picking Hubs - Did you know that you can borrow litter picking kits from your local library? Whether you’re planning a community clean up, or just want to do some litter picking on your walk, ask at your local library for more info or visit our website here.

Tracy Jones, Head of Blaenau Gwent Libraries, said, “We have a brilliant programme of activities during Green Libraries Week that we hope will bring the community together and find out more about all the ways we can help our climate. Everyone is welcome and the library is free to join.”

Green Libraries Week is the annual showcase of the best that UK libraries have to offer, encouraging everyone to discover their library in the last week of October.
